Over the past several weeks I've received many emails about a much advertised movie that is going to hit the theaters on December 7th - The Golden Compass.
As you know, I normally don't spend time critiquing cultural events. Largely because if they emanate from popular culture we should expect them to have the perspective of the world. And then depending on our conviction, we should either use them to better understand our world and those around us; or leave them in the newspaper.
That being said, from the perspective of a Father and a Pastor, I am concerned about what I've read about the underlying direction of this movie. And much of my concern has to do with the target audience being children.
We cannot and MUST NOT bury our heads in the social sand when it comes to our children whose young hearts and souls need our guidance.
With that in mind I have collected several articles below that talk about Philip Pullman himself (author), the trilogy of books which this movie is based on, and the movie itself.
I encourage you to be as 'wise as a serpent' and use the below before 'inhaling.'
The first three links are different websites and then the last portion is part of an email also with links in it.
And then, please comment back and let us know what you think . . . . .

There is a new movie coming to theaters December 7. You should be forewarned about The Golden Compass. The target audience for the movie is children, and it is being promoted in some schools. The Golden Compass is based on a book trilogy that promotes atheistic views, likely to be reflected in the movie.

focus on the family is supposed to discuss this movie all week. im interested to listen in.
The author states in an interview that the inspiration for these books are the 1st 2 books of Milton's Paradise Lost. http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2003/12/12/1071125644900.html?from=storyrhs
Ironic isn't it? Hitler used the Scriptures to justify his acts as did slave owners and klansmen. Maybe Pullman will be misinterpreted and lead people toward seeking Christ, it's been known to happen. I don't plan to be foolish about my parenting but let's be real, here. I have more to be concerned with within Christendom like American ideals such as greed, apathy, self-promotion and the like that taint our churches and children daily. They are insidious and cripple the power of the church as well as its perception by the world. Jesus said that of course the world will act like the world. Instead of worrying about catching non-believer or atheistic 'cooties', shouldn't we be concerned with who of us are loving these people? Why do people like Philip Pullman, whose families have church legacies, become so very hurt and angry? God, please bless this man with your presence, love, salvation and healing. Please bless our children with discernment no matter what the culture promotes or even whatever is popular in the church. Give them your sight, Holy Spirit. k.o.
Thanks for your comments.
I agree k.o. that we must teach our children to live in the freedom of Christ and reject the slavery of greed, apathy, etc. Yes!
I also agree that we as maturing believers should seek ways to be lights and love those who need Christ. That's the heart of the gospel!
Yet, I can't agree with the expression of 'atheistic cooties.' To me that would be equating the very real powers of darkness with an elementary school myth. I do believe that the powers of darkness are very real and that the enemy will use any power at his disposal to capture the hearts and minds of our children.
'In Christ' we having NOTHING to fear. And at the same time we are in a very real battle until Christ returns. That is what I cannot ignore.
